The bigger problem is... how do you know which friends on your list aren't already copying around the protected posts? :-)
True. Much like email I adopt a sense of "it can probably be read by more people than I intended" with even locked posts.
I generally lock various posts based on interest in certain topics (baby stuff), or just wanting to control to a certain degree who sees stuff. I.e. a relatively fixed number of people vs. an unknown quantity of people I have no idea at all about.
Really sensitive stuff, that I don't intend on letting out into the world in some form, generally doesn't make it to LJ, for obvious reasons. There are people I can approach directly if I want to share certain things.
