Jan. 2nd, 2003 10:08 pmFreeciv is addictive. We ended up playing 'til almost 4am... not good when 1 of us has to work in the morning and has a 7am wake-up call and when the other 3 are planning a day full of stuff to do.
Today was really really damn cold, which made sightseeing borderline unpleasant. Last week the weather was fairly mild, with the exception of the snowstorm on C-Day, so we were lucky with that. At least it didn't rain like it did on New Year's Day. We walked through the Financial District and past Wall Street and the NYSE. Afterwards we walked to Battery Park with a view of the Statue of Liberty... we abstained from actually taking the ferry out due to the cold, and a fairly long trip on the ferry isn't that appealing in that case. There's a statue in Battery Park which is currently serving as a temporary WTC memorial. It was a statue which was originally in the lobby of the building and it's damaged remains now stand as a testament to September 11th.
On the way back we walked past the WTC site, which is now just a large building site. It looks as though they're rebuilding the subway line that ran under the WTC towers. I've not kept up with the other things they are planning on doing... I got tired with the endless coverage in the wake of the event that I've avoided a lot of tv because of it. While I can appreciate the sentiment of those that wish there to only be a monument on the site, it's hardly a feasible option. Over 1 million square feet of prime real estate space was lost, the economic impact of that for a city is massive, you can't regain much by building a monument or a park there. Ah well, I guess I'll see what appears there, it'll be a good few years anyway, of that I have little doubt.
Hopefully the weather is friendlier tomorrow, we'll be heading towards the Village and China Town... or such is the plan as it stands. We're aiming for a Saturday matinee for Cabaret, and gambling on rush tickets. If it's sold out we'll give Metamorpheses a try... take a few other theatre addresses with us and see what tickets we can score for cheap :) Saturday night I want to head out to Digital Murder/NY Decay... clubbing, yay!
