Gangs of New York

Went to see Gangs of New York last night.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from it, other than the mention by Kit that it was ultra violent I'd not really heard much about it, though one of our forum members was more than enthused about it.
It was definitely worth the money. A visually stunning movie with some gorgeous set and costume design, even though a lot of it was gritty. Great pacing and direction. There was a lot of violence, but of a more realistic and gritty and unromanticising variety, similar to Gladiator rather than the hammed up violence that you see in most movies these days that generally just makes you laugh.
Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio both give some good performances in this movie. Jim Broadbent is wonderful in his corrupt politician role, but Daniel Day-Lewis is absolutely bloody brilliant as Bill "The Butcher" Cutter. That man should have won a Golden Globe last night. Rather than your standard baddy Day-Lewis also imbues him with some humanity as well, evidenced in some of the conversations he has with Leo's character and little things he does like take an orphaned Jenny in and occasionally feeding random poor people.
Definitely recommended, though not for the faint of heart if you dislike violence... forewarned, there's a lot of it.

You are red. You are impure, but noble. You are precious and true to yourself and others. When you love, you love entirely, and will do anything to make your love happy. You are sure of your identity, therefore, you cannot change others or be changed. You are a true prince, you may be forgotten, but without you, none of us could go on.
What inner color are you?

"Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality; a natural leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right ones. They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once; someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure. They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate."
