A friend of mine went to Japan, and found herself in a park with lots of heavily tattooed Japanese rockabilly kids. They could not believe that she had Japanese tattoos, and she could not believe that they were covered in Celtic knots and gothic script...
I read an article about a guy who got busted for doing tattoos like this. He was upset about gaijin getting tattoos they didn't understand, so he'd write stuff on people like "Insert General Tso's Chicken here" The girl who got that on her stomach thought it didn't make sense because she was a vegetarian. She found at when some asians were laughing at her tattoo.
This was also a plot element in a recent episode of Lost. A character was in Thailand and told he was getting tattooed with something about what kind of quiet reluctant hero he is, he later discovers it means "He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us". The further twist is that what the actors tatoo actually says is "Eagles high up, cleaving the space". But unless you can read chinese, you're not going to know that.
This cartoon is the funniest twist I've seen on this yet.
