And so for a while I've been keeping an eye out on Ebay for old Sierra games. I used to love those things, and some of them I never managed to get my hands on. And from time to time they pop up, though not always for cheap as some of them are extremely rare.

But PreZ managed to find some online too :D

So last night I played some Conquest for Camelot. God how far graphics have come since 1990.

PreZ also managed to find a copy of The Colonel's Bequest, a game I've been trying to find back when games still came on 3.5 and 5.25 inch disks, and it was rare then. So now, only about a decade and a half after first wanting to play it, I might actually get that chance.

I wonder how kids these days would react to seeing some of these games. They're a long long way from the graphics and sound of today. I do wish there were more of the adventure style games that Sierra used to put out though. Nowadays it's strategy of some sort or shoot-em-up. RPG's also aren't quite the same as the way those games were.

Ah well, fun to reminisce.

I remember being incredibly disappointed by the use of FMV (remember when that was all the rage?) in the second game, though the storyline was certainly interesting; who'd have thought you could tie Wagner operas in with Werewolf mythology?.

"Full Motion Video". Basically filmed sequences with real actors (usually atrocious). Every magazine around that time (early/mid 90s) was raving about it, and every game seemed to have it. Command & Conquer had especially cheesy FMV sequences, though Wing Commander 3 proved it could be used quite effectively.

Well, in the case of like C&C it's FMV that's used in the interludes between missions and stuff, not as the actual gameplay, like Gabriel Knight 2, which I find less annoying.

I love the animated interludes between Warcraft 3 missions, they're amazing. The only downside to WC is that usually you play one group, beat the shit out of another and conquer them, only to switch to that group and play them for a while and beat the shit out of another group. Ad nauseum. It's a bit of a tired formula after a while. Plus in nearly every case the leader of the group you're playing is an arrogant wanker, which doesn't exactly endear you to them.
