Visuals

I generally don't really show off what it is I'm doing to the world at large, other than a few odd mentions here and there about a new site design for something or other being up, but as I was screenshotting a number of things, to make sure I have everything documented, I figured I could post some of them here to share.

My current site design, and soon to be ex-, mainly as I've had it up for a few months, and I'm fed up with it and in need of something new. And it was actually meant as something temporary that would only last a month or two at best, as it reflected a few things I was feeling at the time of inception.

The live, and larger, version at http://www.silentgarden.net/

A design I made for a project of PreZ's, Mantra. I remember being really happy with the way that the image for that turned out. The live and larger version of that over at http://www.neuromancy.net/mantra/

An image I made for a layout that I never ended up using. It just didn't fit with what I wanted to do, so now it just kind of sits gathering virtual dust in a folder somewhere. The original is somewhat larger. If anyone wants me to knock up the actual design that I had in mind for it for a site, let me know, it shouldn't take too long. Otherwise it'll sit in that folder until I find somewhere to use it, or not.

Those are gorgeous. Wow. You should show off more often.

Thanks :)

A small fanlisting addiction means there's a fair bit more I can show off, which I'll do soon. Small increments at a time :)

You make me jealous with your skill as always! I really love the first one though, probably because I like flowers, hehe. It's great!!!

Heehhehe :) Thanks.

If you want I can donate scans of similar flowers. They come from a card set I bought at Ikea ;)

I just might take you up on that! I'll let you know later.

Beaaaaaaaaaaaaaaautiful!

Impressive! Now I have the urge to totally redesign my website which has kept basically the same format since 1998...

Hehehe, I seem to have that effect on people when I'm working on something and bouncing ideas off friends. It seems to kickstart other people's creativity towards their sites and inspires them to change something or do something new with it :)

Always a good thing. And thanks for the compliments.

It's hard for me to show off really, which is why I never do it. I don't want to come off as some kind of pretentious wanker.

That and sometimes I'm just so riddled with self doubt over what it is I'm doing that it's hard to objectively see any value in what you're doing.

This stuff is gorgeous.

I have an idea: how about you move back to Australia, teach me how to do all that stuff, then disappear so I have no competition?

*grin*

You know, if you felt like making an LJ stylesheet with that last image, I'd use it... If you felt like it, that is... *heh*

Re:

I'd have to look into how to do LJ stylesheets, because I don't know how to do those. But I'll have a looksee sometime.

Re:

[identity profile] catdraco.livejournal.com 2004-02-04 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm... I'm guessing it's not too difficult. I mean, it's LJ, which is how you spell "html without the hard stuff"...

*grin*

Re:

Either that or I can give you the image and you can work it into your livejournal theme yourself?

Re:

[identity profile] catdraco.livejournal.com 2004-02-04 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, because I have a free account, at the moment all I could do with it is use it as a background, like I do of the photo of my legs. That would be cool, too, but I think I would lose a lot of the image that way (what with the text and all).

But, like I said, that would still be cool.

woo! =)

Full image here:

http://www.silentgarden.net/images/projects/autumnstorm.jpg

There was a light mustard colour 1px border running across the top and bottom, which I removed. It was there because the site layout I had in mind was going to be a horizontal strip across the screen, and I didn't think you'd need that if you want to use it as a background in your LJ.

Credit on your info page would be lovely if you use it :)

Done, and done.

Thankyou, gorgeous!! *hugs* Have a look! (http://www.livejournal.com/~catdraco)

Purty :)

I really do love it, it's just that I really had nothing it would work well for. Nice to see it got a happy home :)

Don't you sometimes wish LJ styled purely with CSS? Or even with XSL?

Re:

[identity profile] tanthe.livejournal.com 2004-02-04 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
LJ sucks in that regard. I had enough trouble getting the fucking thing to look the way it does now, and that's a simple colour issue.

XSL?

Re:

[identity profile] trejkaz.livejournal.com 2004-02-04 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
XSL (or XSL:T, at least) is a full transformation language, basically for when you want extra content to appear which wasn't in the original data and couldn't be done using a 'content' property in a :before or :after section.

I'm thinking of setting up something either pure XML+CSS or XML+XSL on my new weblog I've been experimenting with. It will need to use XML+XSL so it can deliver normal HTML to IE, and either XML+CSS or XML+XSL on the client side for anyone who can accept application/xml content. Basically so if anyone views source, their brain breaks from not seeing any form of HTML or XHTML whatsoever. ;-)

Re:

[identity profile] tanthe.livejournal.com 2004-02-04 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
My brain's breaking just reading your explanation :P

But then I'm not that hot on the more programming/backend side of sites.

Re:

[identity profile] trejkaz.livejournal.com 2004-02-04 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh don't worry, the purely XML+CSS thing is easier to understand, it just requires a paradigm shift because most CSS these days is for styling HTML or XHTML.

I plan to frequently write about Jabber stuff on the new journal, so I'll be wanting a tag specifically for marking up a term which is an XML namespace. Instead of using a <span class="xml-namespace">, if I just write XML I can invent an <xml-namespace> tag or similar which will get styled in the same way. Say goodbye to the 'class' attribute. :-)

Most of the image stuff is just playing around in PhotoShop with images and brushes and the like. The site code is stuff I taught myself with tutorials all over the web. I'm thinking about making a CSS tutorial as thats a major element in how I do my site designs, and it's the thing I recommend most to people to do/learn, and the thing I end up explaining and teaching most often too. So it seems like a good idea to actually have it up on a site that I can send people to.
