Spicerific

There's something slightly intimidating about the sheer volume of spices used in Indian cooking.
Number of spices used for today's dinner (chicken, red lentils and green beans in one pot): 12. Spices used are: salt, pepper, cardamom pods, ground cumin, cumin seeds, cayenne pepper, garam masala (which is technically a spice mixture), cinnamon sticks, turmeric, ground coriander, bay leaves, whole cloves. And I'm still missing one, asafetida, mostly because I haven't gone to the indo-pak grocery store in the next village, and they don't sell it at the regular supermarket.
And this is a recipe from the 'quick and easy indian cooking' book ;) I wonder how many are used in the more elaborate dishes... 224? :D
I also need a spice rack that can accommodate something like 50 different kinds, because I'm running out of space for all the various ones I've got, and cramming them into a cupboard also isn't exactly a handy method for quick retrieval.
Wow. A post about spices and food. I'm sure you're all rivetted.
Depending on whether I still have the energy, I might make a pumpkin pie after dinner, and a new batch of carrot & cumin soup. Cooking is good boredom alleviation, and tasty.
