Attention Whoring

We've been getting a large influx of attention whoring kids on goth.net recently. Post after useless post with that 'woe is me' *hand*staple*forhead* shite. I wonder if it's related to the holiday season, seasonal lunacy or something. I wish it would fuck off and go away already.

The most fun one happened on the weekend, a girl who came into one of the IRC channels. One moment she was stuffing her face with poptarts, the next she was so poor she supposedly only ate twice a week. It got better. She was supposedly severely depressed had a clinically insane mother and couldn't manage to hold a job more than a week. The statistical odds of the job thing alone are staggering.

And then came the "ow" "looks down at arm" and "picks at scabs" comments... DingDingDing... Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner! A cutter, oh joy.

Not being a stranger to depression I know that the one thing I never did was to go around telling complete strangers within a few minutes of meeting them that I'm depressed, have an insane mother, am a lazy fuck (yes, she admitted to this one) and am into self injury *shakes head*. If I wouldn't tell those closest to me, I don't see why I'd divulge this information to those unknown to me.

After the whoring got really bad (she went on for quite some time) eventually the channel regulars got fed up with it. You can only hear so many times that life sucks before you turn around and tell people to fuck off and go fix their problems rather than sit on their ass and whine about it. Subsequently she was told just that. Eventually she decided to leave, but not before posting a "suicide note" to the GN forums. I initially flamed it, then just removed the thing altogether as I had no desire to further feed her attention whoring.

Meanwhile our little poltergeist has been logging on several times since her supposed demise... blessed be the boards that log access ;) So an attention whore and a liar. If I'm not mistaken she was 20... you'd have thought people would have grown up somewhat at that age and matured beyond the behaviour of a 7 year old.

I'll freely admit that people doing that shit are totally annoying, but there is some solace in telling complete strangers about your problems because they don't know you and there's less fear of rejection, and you don't alienate yourself by telling those close to you. I did that in my early net days, but then again maybe I annoyed the hell out of people myself, LOL... but I did make friends out of the ordeal. Just my two cents, now I'm going to go lay on my couch and die. I hate exercising!!! ;)

But there's a huge difference between discussing serious issues and just whoring for attention. And she was just whoring for attention and looking to feel special ("I have to be the freakiest person here" or somesuch). And even if you do find sharing with strangers easier, usually it's still in a one-on-one basis, not in a public channel.

It's not that hard to pick out the people who really wallow in their problems and the attention they try and get with it from those that are seriously troubled and seeking to at least alleviate them if not try to end the problems.

Were you there the other week when we had this idiot in there who kept saying she was so weird and such a freak and everyone thought she was a misfit in school every other sentence? Ugh, I wanted to strangle her. One of those kiddies who is in it to shock mommy and daddy. Bleh.
