Much as I enjoy the furry company of a cat, I think this might be the last time we cat-sit Chestnut. Not because she's not a personable kitty, she really is, but I hear the agonising sound of cat-nails-in-couch way too often. Even though I've reprimanded her on numerous occasions when I've caught her doing it, I still hear her doing it when I'm in another room and not watching her.

Our couch is starting to look quite ghetto at this rate with little ripped up fabric loops all over it. Not that it was super expensive furniture to begin with, thank fuck, but still, this is way more wear and tear than it would normally be facing.

a trick to apply the first time, but work like a dream.
i used to use them on Ollie, who had a bad scratching problem.
Spainy doesn't need them--she's pretty good that way.
but in a pinch?

Two Kitty Discipline Techniques

Which one you use depends on the set-up of your apartment and Chestnut's dislikes.

Option 1: Get a spray bottle and fill it with ice-water. When Chestnut scratches your couch, squirt her. The trick is: you can't let her see you, or she'll connect Lilith with the water.

Option 2: If you can't find a place to hide and squirt, get your vaccuum cleaner and an extension cord. Set up the vaccuum near Chestnut's favorite spot (that alone was enough to break one of our kitty's couch-scratching habit) and hook it up to the extension cord, which you will run into a room out of Chestnut's sight. Turn on the vaccuum, but don't plug in the cord until you hear scratching. She''l get the picture soon, if not the very first time.
