Just recapping the last of the LA stuff, as well as Drop Dead et al.
So Saturday the 28th was the second Nightmare Before Bats Day event. We missed out on all the daytime events, but made it for the evening's food and entertainment. The food was very good, and the dinner entertainment in the form of the Voodoo Organist was hilarious. Great stuff. Dressed like the devil in a red suit, he was rocking his organ on stage and really into his music. The lyrics were a scream too. I was one of the 4 random candidates for the Miss half of the Mr and Miss Nightmare Before Bats Day pagent Noah had come up with at the last minute... I found this out when checking my email late Saturday afternoon and realising that everyone would be outfitted with a voting sheet with their registration packages at NBBD. Eek! I'm not big on getting up in front of people. I didn't win and so was spared much of the parading around in front of groups of people :P
After that it was Tragic Black who were entertaining, though I'm not too sure the vocalist's style is entirely up my alley in several songs. The show wasn't entirely helped by the fact that it was a hotel conference/dining hall and the lighting was crap and too bright. A good show nonetheless. After Tragic Black it was The Last Dance who rocked. A very fun and vibrant show. Even more so was the encore where they got the guys from Frankenstein on stage, as well as those from Tragic Black to play Iggy Pop's I Wanna Be Your Dog. A brilliant ending to our evening. The entertainment wasn't over, but it was already running about an hour or so behind schedule at this point, and it was around 12.30, and we had Disneyland the next day, so we called it a night while Frankenstein made to start their unscheduled performance. Apparantly they only got 4 songs into their set before the hotel management pulled the plug.
On the flip side, we were happy we'd left when we did as we passed a horrific accident that had just happened minutes or so before we got to that section of freeway. We managed to get through the fast backing up traffic in quick order, had we stuck around for more of Frankenstein's set, we would have been stuck on I-5 for a long long time seeing as the accident took up 2 lanes on either side of the northbound section, and included at least 3 cars, one of which was upside down, and the other had the front smashed in.
Sunday we got a fairly late start, and made it to Disneyland around 3pm. Ran around and did various fun rides... the Tea Cups, the Matterhorn, Star Tours, Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain, the Haunted Mansion, the Indiana Jones ride, and a bunch of others. Lots of fun indeed.
9pm was the Haunted Mansion Bats Day photo meet-up. Groups of about 20-30 at a time were photographed in front of the mansion whilst being ushered into the ride. They clocked about 1120 goths going through the Haunted Mansion, which they pulled off in 45 minutes. No mean feat. I can't wait for the photos to start showing up. We got home late, tired and with sore footsies, but happy and entertained, and bearing too many items from the Nightmare Before Christmas gift shop :D
Monday we went to Target, bought a new suitcase to stuff all our new purchases in. Cheaper no doubt than all the USPS shipping we would have had to do. Our flight was that evening, and it was very sad to leave our friends.
We had the most amazing time, and thank you so much
strigoiimorte and
djbloodrose! You're both amazing people, gracious hosts and outstanding friends. Love you guys :)
Little did I know that I'd be hearing another live version of "I Wanna Be Your God" in the space of a week. This time it was courtesy of Ausgang last Friday at the second annual Drop Dead Festival in NYC. Ausgang's first show stateside was great and I really enjoyed it a lot.
I drove into the city with
vinlander71, PreZ had opted out for the Friday, as he wasn't familiar with that day's lineup, and had to be up early on Saturday morning. He joined us for the Saturday and Sunday though. Parking was a lot easier than I thought it would be, especially as the Knitting Factory is down in the Financial District. The staff did a great job dressing up the venue... the first time I walked into the bathroom I did a double take. They'd splattered all the walls and floors with red acrylic paint, making it look like a murder scene. it worked, because I walked in and went "what the fuck happened in here?!" only to realise it was decoration. Doh ;)
Quite a few bands spread out over 2 stages, many of which unknown to me. Good music. Lots of great fashion and people to look at. Lots of girls looking amazing in their retro 50s inspired gotha/rockabilly wear, and some sexy mohawks being sported by the deathrockers. Always nice to see dressing up on grand scale.
Drop Dead's best line-up was Saturday... The Brides, The Empire Hideous, Bella Morte, Cinema Strange and the Skeletal Family. And that was just the one (major) stage. We missed out on the Brides unfortunately, caught some of The Empire Hideous's set. Bella Morte rocked, as usual. Great great show, and Andy's hot as ever :D Then followed by Cinema Strange, who were all dressed up following an asian theme for this performance. Another great show, and one I've been anticipating for well over a year now. After that we ended up heading home.
Sunday saw another performance by CS, this time on the other stage, and earlier than scheduled because some other band had dropped out suddenly. Today's theme was a kind of German elf lederhosen thing. I had a lot of fun watching Mik's elf ears flapping in the wind, as their glue came more and more undone while he was rocking out on his guitar :D Lucas looked great in his little cap and with the red apple cheeks. Daniel... mrow! Hehehehee. Fun stuff at any rate. We spent most of the rest of the night running around between the floors and talking to Kit. Talked to Mik a bit at the CS merchandise stand later, he's a doll.
A fun but exhausting weekend, which I followed up on Tuesday with the aforeblogged Faith and the Muse concert.
And so PreZ and I managed to condense more clubbing and gigging into a 2 week span than we've managed in AGES. Lots of fun though :)
