Seeing as HIV does invade DNA to make more of itself(part of the perks of being a retrovirus) the choice now seems quite obvious for cancer.
Not that I would want to be part of the clinical trials for this one!

Is this science imitating homeopathy(broadly speaking)?

Well, some homeopathy works on the same principle vaccinations do, if I'm not mistaken.

I doubt anyone would be a human clinical trial for something like this unless the outlook was terminal. At that point you have nothing to lose anyway.

The thought of using a virus that mutates so readily for this purpose is frightening to me.

I guess it depends on which exact parts they're using. If they managed to get just the part that attacks specific cells, which they now claim they've "programmed" to attack cancerous cells specifically, then I can see an application.

But then this definitely wouldn't be the first time man decided to fuck with nature, with dire consequences.
