Le Weekend
Nov. 19th, 2003 04:24 pmFriday was fun, we went to see the movie Love Actually, which I thought was a lot of fun. A chick flick as PreZ calls it... well, maybe to a degree, but it's hardly as saccharine as many movies under that header are. British 'chick flicks' seem to temper the saccharine a lot more than their US counterparts.
Written and directed by the guy who wrote Bridget Jones's Diary, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral, it's a series of loosely interconnected portraits of love, romantic and platonic, between various couples... friends, lovers, fathers and stepsons, husbands and wives. It starred an ensemble cast with Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Laura Linney and even Rowan Atkinson as a mildly irritating store clerk.
It was really lovely, and I enjoyed it a lot. I liked that it wasn't all about romantic love, and some stories ended on a bittersweet or poignant note, such as often happens in real life. A great movie, and I can't wait for the DVD to arrive.
Saturday evening we spent hanging out with Cherie and Kit at Karen's place. Karen had also invited two other people over, Dan and Sarah. Tom was out to a concert, and we missed seeing him as we had overslept and ended up doing things a couple of hours after we'd planned.
Getting food was a whole other drama at around 7-8pm in central Jersey on a Saturday night (prior to getting to Karen's). We'd hoped to sit down somewhere for a bite, but everywhere was packed. So we picked up food at the take out window of On The Border (mexican) and ate in the car.
It was a good evening, just chatting away, even though Cherie fell asleep which made it the second time in a row that we'd hung out and she passed out. I'm hoping it's not going to be a pattern :P
Sunday was mostly sleeping in and dealing with some bill and receipt crap.
