Credit Cards Breached
Jun. 19th, 2005 03:44 pmSeeing as this came up when we were at dinner last night:

A security breach has occurred at a third-party processor of payment card transactions that affects over 40 million card accounts, Mastercard International said Friday.
Of the cards involved, 13.9 million were MasterCard-branded cards, which include Maestro and Cirrus, and 22 million were Visa cards, said Visa spokeswoman Rhonda Bentz.
It looks as though Visas are also affected, not just Mastercards (which is what I had originally understood it to be), it was just MC who made the breach public earlier this week. So best to check those statements for purchases you didn't make (and one friend of ours has already been contacted by MC about random charges made to his card, so it's definitely happening).
