Crapola TV

Reality tv has always been mostly idiotic, insipid and profoundly boring, but how bad does it really need to get before they stop making it, and before people stop watching?

They're really scraping the barrel nowadays with Trailer Trash Barbie Britney and her Ken-doll Kevin, and that idiotic new show on Bravo, Being Bobby Brown. You don't even need to see that show, the ads for it already indicate how crap it is, with Whitney Houston and her hubby being obnoxious snots whilst splurging craploads of money at Harrods in London, or Bobby asking people if they know who he is (on several different episodes I might add, not just the once), and him eventually having to explain he's Whitney Houston's husband. If he has to go around saying that, people obviously don't know him (anymore), and don't give a shit, so why the hell does he have his own tv show? And who the hell wants to watch him? Did they run out of interesting people and celebrities to film?

Ditto that crap called The Surreal Life on VH1, where they have a load of has-been semi-famous people, most often 80s tv and movie rejects, shacking up together and being terminally stupid and boring.

How many more years of ever worsening "reality" tv are we going to get exposed to before it finally goes bust? It can't be that long, can it?

Please?

Oh yay! Is this what Oz has to look forward to in the near future!? I can't stand one second of reality crap tv! It drives me absolutely bonkers. I still can't believe we're airing Big Brother 'Series 5' ... BB2 was bad enough, BB3 was really starting to annoy, but they keep going with more episodes?! I think I'm the only person my age who doesn't watch it or reality crap tv lol.

They're going to be airing Big Brother 6 here soon I believe.

There are so many "reality" shows it's ridiculous. Celebrity weight loss shows, weight loss shows, shows where they stick a load of extreme martial arts fighters together to live and train who then have to beat each other up in order to advance further, Survivor, The Apprentice, The Bachelor/ette, etc. etc. ad nauseum. The vast majority of shows is reality it seems. And they're pretty much all crap.

I never understood the whole concept of "reality TV".. it just sounds so dreadfully boring. I'm glad I stopped watching TV before the craze hit.

It could have some interesting potential, but the problem is that it's generally nothing resembling "reality".

There have been plenty of exposé shows where former contestants on the various shows say things never happened, never happened the way they were shown, that they were manipulated by the producers, and that editing teams made intersting cutting decisions that would skew things.

It's all fake scripted garbage, there's nothing real about itt.

I stopped watching TV on a regular basis when I was in highschool. Survivor was on then and everyone in my school was talking about it. I couldn't understand what was so great about it - I saw about five minutes of people arguing with each other and voting people off the island and was annoyed at the stupidity of the whole thing. Even teachers that I highly respected were talking about this crap.

I guess is could be interesting as an experiment to see what happens to a group of morons when they're trapped together with cameras on them. But then it just gets depressing and makes me sad for the species.

Well, it would be interesting if it wasn't all contrived. They claim it's unscripted and reality, but they also air plenty of those "behind the scenes of 'reality' tv" shows where former contestants on the various shows say that they were openly manipulated by the producers, and then the editing team can make anyone look a certain way by making interesting cuts in the footage.

It's all fake garbage.

I never understood Survivor. This is getting out of hand.

I never got it either.

Pity it launched a whole genre of crap tv while it was at it.

I hate reality TV too... though I have to admit I did watch parts of the first season of the Surreal Life, b/c Tammy Faye and Ron Jeremy were quite the pair! None of the seasons have compared since so I don't watch it anymore. Now they have weird shows about the washed-up celebrities trying to lose weight... it's such shit on tv nowadays!

I hate hate reality tv but I must admit that every now and then I catch an episode of Trading Spouses and I can't help but watch. It is like a wonderful sociological experiment.

Reality tv sucks, but then again, so does most tv. Sorry, but I've almost completely given up on the medium of television, only watching films, and new simpsons. I realised there are better things to do.

[identity profile] tanthe.livejournal.com 2005-07-26 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, by and large most tv is crap, and we don't watch very much at all. A few shows and that's it.

I keep thinking it can't get worse, and then I saw an ad for "Brat Camp" where "wild" teenagers get sent to one of those outdoor camps to get their lives under control. I guess this is the end result of letting TV parent your children, let it send them as teenagers to have their spirits broken in the woods. Bah.

I keep waiting for this "fad" to pass... and I'm beginning to think it won't. Every day there is a group of folks here at work discussing one of those god awful shows, and they LOVE them. I just don't understand the appeal of any of them.
