GlutTv

It creeps me out that there is such a thing as competitive eating. Like this country doesn't already have enough issues with gluttony and overeating as it is... now we need to see people cramming insane amounts of food into their gobs at breakneck speed. And people actually watch this stuff too.

What's worse is that they televise these eating competitions on ESPN, a sports network. There's some great irony in that.

What makes me smile and curse this world is that I am much thinner then many of the sporty types, even weighing a good bit less then my normal weight little sister, and I am not sporty, refusing to participate in them or even watch them.

But then again, I do lots of physical labour and cycle about one and a half hour most days of the week to get into town. Can't think of many athletes from school or college who would do the same.

When I see news reports on it, all I can think is that there are people literally starving in this country.

I just finished reading Don't Eat This Book! (http://www.powells.com/biblio/2-0399152601-2) by Morgan Spurlock. It's a great book! Kind of an addendum to his "Super Size Me" movie. I highly recommend it!

Now, I'm not condoning it, but have you seen one of the American competitive eating champs? She's a tiny Asian woman called The Black Widow (http://www.sonyatheblackwidow.com/). I think people watch it because it's almost like a Side Show. "Come watch these freaks stuff their faces!" Personally, it makes me want to puke.

Yeah, I saw that. There's also an asian guy who's in the top of the range, also skinny.

Most of the US competitors I saw were huge though, like some 400lb guy.

Also the way they eat is enough to make you puke... the gorging and literal stuffing of food into their mouths with their bare hands. Urgh.

Competitive eating is just wrong, televised or not. It's disgusting.

Ewwwww. That's on my Why Do People Watch this Filth list, up at the top with reality shows and shows featuring home video of people getting bashed in the crotch.

At least the footage of people getting bashed in the crotch can make you laugh. It's like watching the Darwin Awards in action.

Those shows really do make me question the brainpower of large swathes of humanity though... usually within seconds you can already tell that whatever it is they're doing is a Really Bad Idea (tm) and it's so glaringly obvious there might as well be 50 foot neon signs proclaiming such. And still they do it.

If you want to watch stuff that will make your stomach roll, there's a show on Discovery or TLC called "How Clean Is Your House?" with two British neat-freaks. You see homes on that show that really really make you wonder how people live like that.

Oh gods! I've seen that show. I'll admit that I'm not even in the same hemisphere as neat freak, but some of those people make me look like Martha Stewart (the tatted, pierced version of Martha Stewart--now that's a show I'd watch).
