Authorities are searching for the parents of a 3-month-old girl who died last year after her parents allegedly gave her lethal doses of vodka to quiet her crying, police said.

...

The Broward County Medical Examiner's Office determined that the infant had a blood alcohol level of 0.47 percent. The legal limit for drivers in Florida is 0.08 percent.

!!!

What the fuck?!

A bottle of water, sugar and vodka... it's bad enough some people feed their kids sugar water period, but adding substantial amounts of vodka? enough that you can see effects on the liver from prolonged exposure and an insane blood alcohol level? Argh.

I say do the same to the parents. make both of them have .47% alcohol in their blood. or higher.

via everclear, preferably, so it burns more going down.

OMG. That's horrible. All so they could force her to sleep? WTF is wrong with people?!

Back in The Good Old Days (when people were uniformly clean, courteous, and Knew Their Place), it was gin that was given to babies and small children, along with heroin lozenges, to keep them quiet. Which does not excuse this particular atrocity, or diminish the horror of it in any way.

Even if they did give gin, somehow I doubt that their kids ended up with blood alcohol levels many times higher than the legal limit?

Oh well, you know how it goes. If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer.

=/ I really think there should be some sort of licensing system for human reproduction.

I vacillate on that particular issue. Some days it seems like a great idea given the hordes of idiots who obviously are too stupid/incompassionate/whatever to be parents, and then if you think through where the logical extreme could lead, it scares me and I decide against it.

Mandatory parenting classes would be a good start though.

hmph. The thing is that oftentimes I can't find it in me to disagree with the result of logical extremes.

Sortof tangenty. ...I'm terribly biased of course, but I LOVE hearing my baby nephew scream. He does it amazingly well (ergo for the neighbourhood to appreciate) and for hours on end.

Well, the logical extreme ends up being that who decides what makes a good parent? and if you're more alternatively minded (or goth, or whatever non-mainstream kind of lifestyle/subculture) would that affect someone's decision as to whether or not you'd make a good parent? Etc.

How old is your baby nephew?

He's some younger than Dashiell. September 18th.

Now, see I have no problem with the logical extreme mostly because in my little fantasies, I'M the Government, bahahahaha.

Oh good gods almighty. Of course this happened in my stretch of swamp. I swear, people are a SPECIAL kind of moron down here. If you know how many kids died each year because parents left them in parked cars, you would probably puke. And apparently, the Powers that Be aren't any brighter.

"Makeisha Dantus died in 2004 but her parents were not charged until last month. By that time, they had disappeared."

Beg your pardon? Died in 2004, and only charged last month?!?
