A Doll? Why?

Yesterday evening I was in a Barnes and Noble for a while before heading off to a supermarket, to see what Paperblanks journals are like in the flesh*, and to browse around the magazine rack a bit. A woman came up to me who had seen me through the window as I was walking around with Dashiell in the mei tai carrier. She said she'd thought I was carrying a doll.

Now, this is kind of odd as an isolated incident, but it's not the first time. A few weeks ago at the mall I had it happen, and not long before that too.

While I like to think I don't look my age, I certainly don't look young enough to be carrying a doll around without looking like a right silly prat. Seriously, what adult woman would be carrying a life size baby doll around? In a store/mall? Worn on the body in a carrier?

* Someone on [livejournal.com profile] embodiment was showing off their Paperblanks journal, and I fell in love. So I wanted to see what they were like in the flesh and what the sizing was like before I order online, as the local B&N's selection was abysmal, and there are no other stores catering to blank journals nearby.

The above doll story is also part of yesterday's [livejournal.com profile] embodiment entry.

That lady is a bit off. How bizarre.

Oh, I've had people honestly think I had "a puppy in there."

It's so sad to think that out of all the things you could want to be cradling close to your heart while you go about your biz, the last thing people seem to think of is that it might be your child. :-/

I've seen those toy dogs in handbags, but nobody would sling one, would they?

People really are strange, especially as having your child in a carrier seems like the most straightforward thing.

well, my sister DOES carry her cat around in a sling I gave her. o_O That cat is so weird!

[identity profile] tanthe.livejournal.com 2006-01-05 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'll say o.O

That is a totally bizarre thing to think. I agree with you.

What do paperblank journals look like? I just bought myself a moleskine since my current journal is almost full. I don't write in it often enough, though.

http://paperblanks.com/ has pictures, they don't sell from there though.

I really like the French Ornate collection (and might get a green French Ornate addressbook, as I was using the address section of an old dayplanner as my current one).

The famous author/artist ones are really nice too, as are the ones that look like embossed/foiled old books. They're about $10-13 or so on Amazon from memory.

I know, and they're nicely priced too.

In regards to the infrequent journalling, that's why I joined [livejournal.com profile] embodiment. The goal is daily journal entries in the paper journal.

I used to paper journal a lot during my teens (and my earliest journal dates to about age 10-11), in my early twenties I ended up writing long 12 sheet letters to my best friend kind of instead of journalling, and in the last few years I haven't written in a journal much. I've wanted to get back into it, and figured that this might be a good way.

Membership is closed though until the end of the year, but the community is friendable/readable (though quite busy at the moment, so it's on a filter for me).

[identity profile] abigailvr.livejournal.com 2006-01-04 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't think now is the time for me to try to make that kind of commitment, or I would have joined as well. I remember your earlier post about it and I was interested.

Yeah, a pending baby is a good reason not to.

Ah well, maybe after things settle down you might be able to look into it on a more relaxed basis?

I'm thinking of getting another journal for Dashiell, where I write to him about how he's doing, for the future when he's bigger to read it. A more regular thing (not strictly daily though) similar to the monthly newsletters I do online, but in a tangible form, which I like a lot.

When I mentioned getting a Paperblanks address book PreZ was like "why? you can use my old Palmpilot"... geeks, they don't get it :P I like having a tangible paper record.

A journal for Dash is a great idea. I wish I had something like that for Niels. Some day I would like to gather all my posts about him into one place. I don't know when I'll have the time for THAT though.

I still like having a paper addressbook too. I don't know why.

Oh, and Barnes and Noble's website has a larger selection than Amazon I believe. (But we have Prime on Amazon, so "free" 2-day shipping ;))

That's so weird. One of my LLL leaders said people kept asking if she had a cat in the sling. WTF?

Kinda makes me sad, like our society is so used to "plastic parenting" they don't comprehend the sling deal, you know?

[identity profile] tanthe.livejournal.com 2006-01-04 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
As I said to [livejournal.com profile] jbarbie23, I know people carry those toy dogs around in their handbags, but in a sling? ditto for cats obviously.

And I had Dash in a mei tai... that thing looks the most like a conventional modern-day carrier (Bjorn etc.) so it was even more mystifying.

LOL some people are just plain nutters!!

I still haven't had a chance to get a paper journal yet, maybe I should just post in my journal online for the time being!
I've been so busy painting & renovating the damn house! Just when you think you've finished, the front door glass breaks lol.

Oh and the other day, I read all those letters ya sent me over the years lol... Man that was some reading! I remember alot of what was in those like yesterday, after reading some of them, I literally had tears running down my cheeks from laughing!

*hugs*

That is extremely weird. That's all I can think of in response.
