Funny video http://www.cane-toad.com/movies/Cane-toad_divx_720x576.avi (approx. 4 minutes).

Synopsis: A yobbo cane toad learns the dangers of being one of the less adored icons of the Aussie landscape.

Incidentally, this documentary is well worth watching, and hilarious to boot. It's available for rent at Netflix for the curious. PreZ and I saw it just over a year ago when PreZ borrowed it from a then co-worker. Very strange, very funny.

I forget where I came across it, but apparently they caught a cane toad the size of a small dog (http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,21454462-5006007,00.html) not too long ago.

A toad. That you can walk on a leash. O.O

Yeah, they get to be quite large.

They're a menace, and one of many shining examples in Australia of why introduction of non-native species into an isolated ecosystem is a Really Bad Idea &tm;

It's not just Australia. Florida is home to all kinds of mutant flora and fauna not native to the state.

Including, but not limited to, love bugs, parrots, armadillos, and monkeys in the everglades. :p

And cane toads. Because someone was smart enough to introduce them in Florida too... :P

Why so they have! I wonder if they get to the size of dogs down here. Probably not; I think traffic takes them out before they get too big. :p

The biggest introduced pest we have at the mo in my neck of the swamp is iguanas. People "release" them when they get too big down here, and they grow fuck off HUGE! There's a 4-5 foot one that hangs out in my parents' yard all the time.

Well, toad "popping" seems to be a national sport in AU right now, and with 200 million cane toads it's not really denting their numbers either :P

I hate people who release their pets into the wild because they were too fucking ignorant to research what it would become when it was no longer young, small and cute. Then again, pet stores need a kick in the bollocks as well for not educating their customers either, but rather just taking the money.

Toad popping sounds like more fun than it ought to be ...

People releasing their pets into the wild is actually a big problem down here, especially reptiles. They're having a problem with pythons in the everglades. I think not too long ago, one tried to eat a small alligator and exploded. The photo made the national news if I remember. The snakes should eat the monkeys instead. It would solve 2 problems at once. :p
