George who? Anyway, may I suggest that you try and purchase some Thomas books with the original painted illustrations that were done by the writer? Just a suggestion as that was a good memory of my childhood.
He's a stand up comedian, and he can have a rather foul mouth. Think along the lines of Denis Leary... very caustic and spices things liberally with expletives ;)
When I became an au pair in PA in 1994, I was very disconcerted to discover that Thomas the Tank Engine was narrated by this strange, unknown American. Ringo rules.

I don't understand why they'd need to re-do the narration really... the guy was a Beatle for crying out loud, and surely american kids can understand him.
But Ringo strikes me as a lot more wholesome than George Carlin, which is why Carlin is much more jarring for me.
I understand that Ringo no longer narrates the Thomas series... According to IMDb, Michael Angelis (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0029617/) narrated from 1991-1995, and there have been no English narrators since.
