I don't claim to be up on fashion or particularly fashion forward, so can someone please tell me what the deal is with the new trend of wearing wellington boots?

Seriously? What. The. Fuck.

When I was in NYC with my brother I first noticed it, and it seems to be popping up all over the place now. Even with funky patterns, there's something distinctly ugly about wellington boots. And when they're worn when the weather is dry, it looks even more ridiculous. I've questioned the style aspect of wearing Ugg boots with everything, but they're haute fashion compared to wearing rubber wellies with a nice skirt or outfit.

I haven't worn wellies since I was a kid, and I don't intend to unless I move somewhere where it rains a lot or if we have a garden I plan to spend a lot of time mucking about it.

Once again I can just be glad that I'm not a slave to fashion trends...

well - wellingtons are great when it's been snowing and or raining - particularly in New Jersey with all the shit roads and footpaths.

but wearing them when it's not raining is just a little weird....

I think I like them because I didn't have them as a kid. I like seeing them on people when it's raining, since they're practical and colorful...

Of course, mine look like this (http://flickr.com/photos/czarina/43084572/).

Your rain boots are much more awesome than the ones I've seen. A lot more elegant than your average Wellies.

They're still weird when worn by people when it's not raining and isn't supposed to rain at all ;)

We noticed it on the NY subway a few years ago. I'm amazed it's still hanging on, but that's what bad fashions do. I love wellies. Just, not as a fashion statement

I read an article about them becoming popular a few months ago. Craziness.

First-I'm sorry to post as anonymous, I deleted my journal but I stumbled on your entry because I just can't shake my addiction and I'm writing a comment cause I live in New York and thought I could shed some light on the situation.

Wellies are not considered fashion (by me at least). If you live or work in NYC you'll soon notice that the roads are in such bad condition that when it rains there is no other shoe that will keep your feet dry even if you only have to go one block down the street. The best boots around won't manage it and who would want to ruin the best boots around by stepping into the huge puddles anyway. Even my rain boots almost don't stand up to the size of the puddles. Even better, they keep you dry from the knees down. The bit your umbrella just never covers.

The colours and patterns are just the only way to make an ugly shoe at least bearable cause there really isn't any piece of clothing they particularly enhance.

As for wearing them in fine weather. I never see them out on a day when it hasn't rained. I have been caught out putting them on for a rainy morning, going to work and having it clear up during the day so I look silly on my way home.

Thats my defense of the rain boot- the most practical shoe I've ever bought!

Sure, they're practical shoes, and handy in wet weather, I'll never dispute that... it's just when they're worn on days when it's dry and sunny and absolutely not forecast at all to rain, which is what happened the times I've seen them.

When worn purely as a fashion statement rather than as prettier looking practical gear, then it's just ridiculous.

(And who are you anyway? :P)

gumboots were huge a few years ago in new york...rediculous. i guess they still are.

yes, there were times when i wished i had a pair of gumboots when walking in torrential downpours (especially being back down in NOLA)-but...i haven't been able to get that picture of me at age 8 with bright red ones up to my knees out of my head.

at least shrimping boots (http://www.anglingcentre.net/acatalog/9788NEW.JPG) aren't fashionable, otherwise we'd be in for it.

I think they might be more fashionable now than a few years ago. I hadn't noticed them before now (and you'd think I would have), and it seemed to be everywhere all of a sudden.

Can you imagine how much your feet would sweat in those things? Ugh. That's almost as hideous as the "crocs" everyone has on down here.

Bleh.

Urgh, Crocs, we have them up here as well (and all over the US I believe, I remember seeing them in Vegas too).

I guess socks would help cut down the sweating bit, and I think they're lined a little too... but they still look ridiculous. Especially when it's not raining or forecast to rain.
