SUV idiocy

Last week I was driving to the store, as you do, and en route to the store they've been digging up the road a lot and then putting temporary metal plates over the drying asphalt. Nothing too major, just a little bumpy due to the height difference of max. 1 inch. Now on several occasions I've had SUV's in front and behind me, all veer off into the other lane to avoid these metal plates. See, I can understand this behaviour if you were driving around in a horsedrawn Amish buggy with fuck-all suspension, but they're in a goddamn SUV! this thing is built to go off-road, you'd think they'd relish at the chance to get their SUV on something remotely resembling uneven road, because lord knows these SUV's probably never see anything other than asphalt and the occasional corner of grass if they accidentally take the corner into their driveway too tightly...
I'm wondering how happy people are with their gas-guzzling SUV's now that the gas prices around here have hit $2.05+/gallon for the cheapie-unleaded stuff...
