I came across this reading my friends list, as someone referenced it, and I was curious.

This is definitely something that needs to be brought to people's attention, as it can have some serious implications.

If someone has a Frienditto account and has provided the site with their LJ username and password, not only can they use the site to archive publically-viewable posts (theirs or anyone else's), but they can also archive any friends-locked post made by someone on their friends list that is viewable to them - thus making a public record of something the original poster thought was private. In effect it's a form of cut'n'paste activity that archives the posts in question for the whole world to see - even if the original poster should go back and lock that post to private or delete it entirely.

The LiveJournal Abuse Team has the following advice concerning Frienditto:

Frienditto is not affiliated with LiveJournal in any way. As such, this website does not have access to any entries which are not publicly viewable. If someone provides them with their LiveJournal username and password, however, it gives this site access to all non-public entries that account would have access to. We can only recommend that you do not provide your username and password to any person or website to ensure the security of your account.

Additionally, if you believe anyone on your Friends list may have provided their login information to this website, we can only advise that you remove them from your Friends list. This website will have access to your Friends-only entries as long as any person on your Friends list has given the site access. If any content is present on Frienditto which you do not wish to be there, you will need to resolve the issue with that website.

    Regards,

For lists of LJ accounts that have been "Frienditto'd" check out [livejournal.com profile] ditto_cops.

And in case it needs mentioning again, don't sign up for it, obviously.

This just sheds some stronger light on what I've thought about protected posts all the time.

If you give something to somebody, there is always a chance that it will no longer be private. People pass on secrets... even more so if they think the other person can be trusted.

Informing people about Frienditto solves the problem of people trusting Frienditto. The bigger problem is... how do you know which friends on your list aren't already copying around the protected posts? :-)

True. Much like email I adopt a sense of "it can probably be read by more people than I intended" with even locked posts.

I generally lock various posts based on interest in certain topics (baby stuff), or just wanting to control to a certain degree who sees stuff. I.e. a relatively fixed number of people vs. an unknown quantity of people I have no idea at all about.

Really sensitive stuff, that I don't intend on letting out into the world in some form, generally doesn't make it to LJ, for obvious reasons. There are people I can approach directly if I want to share certain things.

heh, There is a reason there is only 12 people on my trusted LJ account. While I haven't posted much, I intend on it. And I had to go through and figure out who I truly trusted. yeah, I trust some more than others, but the 12 people on there, I'd trust with damn near anything...

But there is still a lot of stuff I doubt ANYONE but me will ever know :P

Then again, this also counts for anything you say to any person "in real life" as well.
