Road Trip!

Denver airport is supposed to open at noon on Friday. We had a flight to San Francisco scheduled to leave at 1.30pm, with a connecting flight on to NY JFK. Operative word being had. We were about to repack our luggage and PreZ checked the United Airlines website to find our flight cancelled.

Whoop-de-fucking-do.

Kit spent the entire day trying to contact his airline, again, to no avail. Orbitz so far has told him that the first available flight is the 27th, which would also ruin his booked Christmas trip to his dad in Tennessee which is scheduled to leave from L.A. on Sunday.

PreZ is on hold to United Airlines, and has been for a really long while so far. We're trying to find out what our flight options are, though I'm not holding my breath. The first direct flight they told us about the other day was Sunday, and they told us about that a day ago. With supposedly 4000 people stuck at Denver airport all desperate to get home, I'll bet money that that flight will be full.

So, we're actually considering a road trip to Los Angeles. It's a 14 hour drive, and we have 3 licensed drivers, so a direct drive should be doable. Odds are in our favour that there are more flights to the east coast from there, and little chance of snow, and it doesn't look like there will be a flight for us in the next 14 hours or so anyway...

Edit: first flight out of Denver is Christmas day, so we're driving to L.A. and flying out Sunday morning instead.

So, Nadya, we'll be seeing you again really soon. And maybe we'll be able to hook up with [livejournal.com profile] strigoiimorte and [livejournal.com profile] djbloodrose.

Being able to update LJ from a gasstation in who knows where Utah on a laptop with national wireless broadband access. Heh.

We're about 2-3 hours from Vegas right now, where we'll be staying overnight at the Aladdin hotel and casino. If we get in on time and can organise babysitting, we might even go see Cirque du Soleil's KA. Kit hasn't seen that yet, and PreZ always said that he'd go again the next time he was in Las Vegas, lol. But we'll have to get to Vegas first. We're encountering some icy and nasty conditions, as well as some snow in parts. At one point we saw a pick-up truck that had managed to flip itself onto its roof. Ouchie.

Tomorrow we head out to Los Angeles. Sadly we won't be able to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] strigoiimorte because he was heading to his family this morning, but we might be able to hook up with [livejournal.com profile] djbloodrose because she'll still be in the LA area. And of course, we get to see [livejournal.com profile] nadya_lev again, whee! I think she wants us to help her buy a bed at Ikea tomorrow. And why not, this has been a crazy trip anyway ;)

It's nice to at least not still be stuck in Breckenridge, though it's gorgeous there and we skied some lovely powder on one of the slopes yesterday afternoon. And it's a huge relief not to be stuck at Denver airport with thousands of hungry, tired, cranky and delayed travellers.
