Friday night I accidentally managed to catch Lovesick on Bravo while channel surfing in the wee hours, and then PreZ and I continued to watch the rest of it, of course. Lovesick being the tv show/special that documented bringing Cirque du Soleil's Zumanity to the stage in Vegas, much in the way that Fire Within documented the bringing of Cirque's Varekai show to the stage, though that particular show ran for about 20 half hour episodes, and this seemed more of a one-off special.

Interesting, and very fortuitous as we'll be in Vegas next month and have tickets for Zumanity.

For the unaware, Zumanity is basically Cirque's venture into the erotic, so a novel twist on the Vegas T&A show I guess, and quite a departure for the usually all ages Cirque du Soleil. It definitely looks amazing though, even with an entirely different focus and vision, and with decadence taken in a very different direction.

The weirdest part though were the ads during the breaks... every ad break had at least one ad geared to the geriatric crowd. AARP medicaid supplement cards, 2 different people mover/power chair companies, portable at-home defibrillator kits, portable at-home oxygen tank refillers and carrier tanks. Now, we did joke about the fact that with an erotic show some viewers might need the latter two items, but other than that, it was just odd to see the ads geared to a crowd that I wouldn't expect to be watching that show, mostly as ads are usually slanted to some expected audience, in a very gender/age sterotypical way.

But who knows, maybe the oldies are just way more sexual/sensual/kinky than I give them credit for (or wanted to imagine), and more power to them if they are...

People in their 70s now were right there when the soldiers came home from WWII, Teddy Boys got into razor and bike-chain fights, Eddie Cochrane and Gene Vincent were the original Motorbike Bad Boys, when the Beatles hit, and were beginning to raise families when Flower Power began.

Somehow, though your sexuality changes to some degree over time, I don't imagine you wake up one day and find it's gone. In a world obsessed with youth, we find it hard to see elderly people (or people with handicaps) as sexual, but I'm willing to bet they're as stuck with the basic urges as anyone else. And I say that's a good thing - I don't want to lose my mojo just because I get older.

Oh, I'm well aware oldies are still having sex etc. :)

Mostly the thing that perplexed me were just the ads. Usually ads are geared to whomever is likely to be the biggest target audience, so "kids", "males 18-30" or "women 18-30"... those seem to be the major 3 that they cater to usually at least. Having old age pensioner products being advertised isn't weird in and of itself, as I've seen them in ad breaks all over the place at times, it was just the program they were consistently bookending that made for the odd combination.

I've been wanting to go see it since it came out. I met Joey Arias in Atlanta when I was doing a Glitterdome. He was a guest performer and I was lucky enough to chauffer him around while he was there. He's great!

Definitely check Bravo's tv listings to see if Lovesick re-runs... knowing Bravo it probably will at some point though. It was a very interesting program, especially if you love Cirque, as I know you do, and showcases the trials and tribulations of launching a show, an erotic show, and all the little personal stuff that goes on.
