While I was at Whole Foods just before the weekend, I grabbed some Hip Whip, because I needed Cool Whip, and they don't have Cool Whip at WF (and I'm a slacker and didn't want to get actual cream to whip myself, nor did I want to go to a different supermarket after the trip to WF).

Hip Whip is an all natural, whole foods alternative to Cool Whip (which I guess isn't made of whole ingredients and has the chemical preservative stuff). It's also non-dairy, and from a quick look at the ingredients list vegan to boot.

So we tried some of that on our strawberries last night, and to be frank, I think it's disgusting. It actually tasted a bit like rancid cream, which is no small feat when you consider that there's no dairy in it at all. Yech!

Avoid.

Completely vegan? No casein either?

Of course, it doesn't matter if it's disgusting.

I guess it might be one of those "your mileage may vary" things, but I really didn't care for it.

It started when I opened the container... not that I need things to be perfectly white, but it had this odd beige colour. And rather than being soft and smooth, like cool whip or cream is, it had a bit of a mousse-like or creme fraiche-like texture, only it was like it hadn't whipped up to the mousse-like texture properly. I can be a bit picky about texture sometimes, but I love mousse. So thumbs down for that too. It smelled odd, a bit like rancid milk/dairy, and sweeter obviously because it's got sweeteners added into it.

And then the taste, it tasted as icky as it smelled.

Anyway, the next time I'm looking for a whole foods alternative to Cool Whip, I might just go with real whipping cream. Though I realise that that's not an option for you because of the dairy.

In my experience, some imitation dairy only taste good after you haven't had the real thing for a while. I have to say that this doesn't sound like it ever tastes good. Yuck.

Hey, if I didn't have the allergy issue, I'd definitely eat real whipping cream before cool whip!
