She's alive, ALIVE!

As of today we've been in the new place just over a week, and I've had net access back since Saturday (hence my absence before). This weekend we managed to make great strides in controlling the chaos and unpacking and such, so it slowly starts to feel more like home.
We have to get all the boxes of/and clothing in the bedroom sorted today, because tomorrow our new bed gets delivered as well as the new dresser, which I'm looking forward to. We've had our new mattress since we moved in here, but it's been on the basic metal frame that came with it. The Tempur-Pedic is interesting to sleep on... I'm really happy with the complete lack of poking springs and hard edges. Turning around on it is interesting, and reminds me a bit of trying to roll over when in the late stages of pregnancy, when you're like a beached whale trying to re-float itself. Because of the way that the foam absorbs movement and shocks, it's like trying to roll over in frozen molasses, which makes for a strange sensation.
The move itself went okay, though it was a drawn out 2 day affair. Many thanks to
daskreestof who helped us, along with one other person.
The one thing that really annoyed the hell out of me was how the old landlords were on the place like vultures on a corpse before we'd even moved all our stuff out. They have an inside door/staircase to the place (they live upstairs, and we in their basement apartment), and were already looking around the place and discussing with their future son-in-law the various things that needed doing, like paint and whatever. The biggest problem was that the place was still messy, there were random items still strewn about the place that needed moving, all kinds of dust and dirt that had been tracked in during the day and had fallen out of nooks and crannies of furniture, random bits of paper and detritus and all that kind of thing, so it looked very messy.
On Sunday our landlady cornered
prez while I was talking to someone else, and accused us of trashing the place... this was before all the stuff was gone, before all the trash had been taken out and the place cleaned. And yes, at the time it did look pretty horrendous, but I also knew that just running the vacuum through the place would make a huge difference, and that with some time spent cleaning it would look just fine. It mostly shit me up the wall because we were still renting until the end of the month (still a couple of days away at the time), hadn't moved out completely yet, hadn't turned in our keys yet etc. so they really had no business being in there at all until we were ready to do the walk-through and turn in the keys.
We spent a couple of hours late Sunday afternoon and early evening cleaning the place up, and it looked pretty fabulous when we left. It only needed a new coat of paint after 5+ years of habitation and a professional carpet cleaner to go through the place.
Monday we went and turned in the keys. Much to my satisfaction our landlady ate her words and proclaimed that I must be a miracle worker because of how nice the place looked after it was clean (we did tell her it would, and they insisted on being in there before it was viewer ready, so their own fault). We got most of our security deposit back, with some taken out due to a sizable hole that PreZ accidentally burned into the carpet when a soldering iron that he thought was off fell onto it, and some ancient burned on food that wouldn't come off the stove no matter what. Not bad all things considered, especially when the carpet would need to be completely replaced due to that hole.
Sadly the 2 days of moving and cleaning meant that we had very little time at all to unpack, and so most of the living room and kitchen and part of the office were floor to ceiling boxes. We had to do bits at a time during the next week, which is a frustrating way to unpack. Finally we have a large portion of boxes and stuff unpacked. We still need to do a lot of sorting, but we're getting there.
In other news, Dashiell is still in a normal diurnal cycle. Miracles will never cease.

Date: 2007-05-07 05:32 pm (UTC)We're going to have the same discussions with our landlords. Most of the 'damage' is caused by normal use, so I think they can't withdraw anything from our security deposit.
Our move has been delayed a couple of days, due to the floor not being ready in time.. we're planning to do the move later this week.

Date: 2007-05-08 08:26 am (UTC)Glad to hear you got the majority of your security deposit back! Nothing worse, when they get all snarkey and try to find faults, so they don't need to give it all back!
Give that little cutie of yours a huge hug from Auntie Nic, and I can't wait to see him! Oh! You and Prez too, of course!!! :o)
*Hugs*
