I haven't felt much like updating lately, but that probably makes no nevermind to most people here anyway.

I've not been watching the presidential debates, one is preaching to the choir in my case, and the other I cannot stand to watch on television. Having his visage flash across the screen is enough to elevate my bloodpressure to dangerous levels and almost incite me to homicidal violence.

And I can't vote anyway.

The only person in this household who can, most certainly isn't going to vote for the chimp. I've seen some of Kerry's solo speeches on C-Span before, so it's not like I'm unaware of his stance on things. I just can't wait to get this election crap out of the way already.

I noticed that they're ratcheting up the fear levels already, now it's missing stuff in Iraq that can possibly be used for nuclear weapons. 3 weeks 'til election day, it bloody figures. That shitty rag the NY Post was already construing Howard's win as a victory for Bush. Just because Howard is examining Bush's innards up close and personal like, doesn't mean that Dubya is a shoe-in. At least I bloody hope not.

Last weekend Kit came over on the Saturday, and ended up staying 'til Monday afternoon. Lots of design chatter. I got lots done on my cheongsam, the skull fabric one anyway, as the other needs interfacing I didn't have. PreZ spent most of the weekend glued to AutoCad working on the design specs for the case mod.

We went out and watched Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow, which I enjoyed. PreZ and Kit had various gripes about the technology, and certain things were quite iffy. The dialogue was a bit trite, which was a shame. It just all seemed a tad to stale or forced or something, not quite as fluid as the Bogie/Hepburn banter used to be, which they were obviously nodding to, and other 30s/40s era stuff.

Stylistically it's a gorgeous movie though, much with the eyecandy. Angelina Jolie was grossly underused though, and it would have been nicer if she'd dropped that weird British accent.

This weekend was mostly uneventful. Sunday we headed down to NJ to hang out with Tom. Karen was off for a gaming night, and so we decided the three of us might go to Makeda's. Unfortunately they were closed for a private function, and we ended up going for Indian food instead. A lovely meal, but Ethiopian from Makeda's would have been nicer, mostly because we've both had a hankering for that for some time now.

We followed it up by a game of Scrabble back at Tom's place. Geeks of the world, unite ;)

Never let anyone tell you Scrabble isn't dangerous... I'm sporting a nice bruise thanks to PreZ. He dropped their Oxford dictionary on me.

We received the Sims 2 in an Amazon order last week. I'm suitably hooked. Sims that actually age and go through the life stages (baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult, elder),  that have children that are mixes of the parent's genetics... hello addiction.

The only downside is that there's a lot less items and such in the game than there was in the first one. So I'm positive we can start expecting the add-on packs to start rolling out soon enough, I just hope they add more stuff into each pack and that we don't just end up getting retreads of the same stuff that was in the add-ons for the first game.

I also received my copy of the second League of Extraordinary Gentleman volume. I've read all of the comic, but not the compendium of League compiled info/notes/story in the back. Definitely not a comic they'll turn into a movie. Not without butchering the hell out of it, which they'd have to if it were to come in at anything below an R rating. Considering the butchering they did to the plot of the first graphic novel, which was perfect for a film as it was, I doubt a movie based on the second volume would even remotely resemble the graphic novel at all. It was hard enough to find the first graphic novel in that travesty of a movie.

Which is a movie I recently found *cough*. Costume reference mostly, because I liked several of the outfits in the movie. It's much the same reason I (can) watch Van Helsing. The LXG movie was pretty decent, up 'til the point they set off for Venice. That's when things really went down the crapper. Such a shame too... they had the budget, and they had a good cast, and it was all for nothing.

Late now, tired, long day, must sleep.

I feel the same way. I don't want to settle for voting for Kerry just cause he's the lesser of two evils but at the same time I don't want to up Bush's chance of winning. Oh, what to do, can't wait till it's all over.

Well, this country's electoral system is a two party system. Thinking that someone like a Nader or any other independant will ever get in has the same chance as a snowball in hell. It's not going to happen, not until the entire voting/electoral system gets overhauled.

So, this means that there are only two realistic candidates. Kerry actually has good ideas and policies, watch some of his stuff on C-Span. In a race as close as this, and with someone at the helm of the country whom I find personally reprehensible, one would have to ask oneself if they could stomach that their conscience vote for a chanceless independant is basically a vote less for the opposition with a shot, and if they could live with the possible result.

For me it wouldn't be too hard of a choice really, even though one would have to resign to the fact that there are only two choices. Aside from the whole "lesser of two evils" stuff, the Democrats have a much better track record on various issues I find important:

- Women's (reproductive) rights
- Black/ethnic minority rights
- Gay rights
- Environment
- National deficit
- International politics
- Healthcare & Education

While from an economical/financial point of view, my husband and I are better off with a Republican in office, we find other things more important to us than tax-cut carrots and other things that are often dangled in front of voter's faces to distract them from the real issues. An irony that never fails to amuse me, seeing as many of the people who vote due to that kind of stuff often aren't actually going to financially benefit from a lot of it, as it's aimed at higher income families.

And all of these points are completely aside from the fact that Bush lied about Iraq and all that crap. "When Clinton lied, nobody died" etc.

The Iraq stuff definitely bothers me also, but it wouldn't be my only reason for voting against Bush. That said, the fact that as a country we were lied to over and over again about several things is definitely a Bad Thing (tm), no matter how much they now try to justify the means with the end... "Saddam is a bad man who needed to be removed from power"... great, well I would have appreciated being told that that was the reason, rather than told it was first for one reason, then another reason and it turns out to be for a third or fourth one.

Anyway, etc. etc.

Thanks for the run-down, I guess I am too much of an idealist and underneath my gloom secretly lies an optomist. Being of the Black/ethnic minority bunch I can only hope my vote will count (at least I am not in Florida).

Ah, you should have seen Al Sharpton's speech at the Democratic National Convention, in which he addressed the president about getting black voters behind the Republicans:

Mr. President, as I close, Mr. President, I heard you say Friday that you had questions for voters, particularly African- American voters. And you asked the question: Did the Democratic Party take us for granted? Well, I have raised questions. But let me answer your question.

You said the Republican Party was the party of Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. It is true that Mr. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, after which there was a commitment to give 40 acres and a mule.

That's where the argument, to this day, of reparations starts. We never got the 40 acres. We went all the way to Herbert Hoover, and we never got the 40 acres.

We didn't get the mule. So we decided we'd ride this donkey as far as it would take us.

(APPLAUSE)

Mr. President, you said we would have more leverage if both parties got our votes, but we didn't come this far playing political games. It was those that earned our vote that got our vote. We got the Civil Rights Act under a Democrat. We got the Voting Rights Act under a Democrat. We got the right to organize under Democrats.

(APPLAUSE)

Mr. President, the reason we are fighting so hard, the reason we took Florida so seriously, is our right to vote wasn't gained because of our age. Our vote was soaked in the blood of martyrs, soaked in the blood of Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner, soaked in the blood of four little girls in Birmingham. This vote is sacred to us.

(APPLAUSE)

This vote can't be bargained away.

(APPLAUSE)

This vote can't be given away.

(APPLAUSE)

Mr. President, in all due respect, Mr. President, read my lips: Our vote is not for sale.

His entire speech is transcripted here at Michael Moore's site (http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/index.php?id=114) and probably dozens of other places on the web.

Al Sharpton is indeed a great speaker.

Where I am from most Hispanics don't vote even if they are citizens (I am sad to say myself included). I remember my father voted for Bush because he didn't really understand. I think Kerry would be surprised at how many votes he can garner by somehow gearing towards the hispanic community aswell, which unfortunately seems to be looked past quite often.

I'll read the transcript, thanks for the link.
