This person was a total stranger in the IRC channel, and within 5 minutes was asking random strangers for help naming her new baby.

[Grey_Loki] Satan.
[RAGDOLL666] i am going to have a girl and was thinking discordia but my hubby doesnt like it

[Lilith] I think naming a kid Discordia is asking for trouble, ditto Dementica
[RAGDOLL666] well yeah i was thinking about that
[Lilith] either they have to live up to a name where they're an asshole sowing discord, or mental deterioration...

At least her husband seems to have a working brain in his head.

Apparently he thinks it's cool because it sounds like 'dragon'. I neglected to ask how old her son is, but he can't be that old.

And one day he'll grow up to realise his parents watched The Crow one too many times...

I hope it's someone kidding around. If not, the parents are going to have to deal with a lot more grief, because no one is going to take them seriously on paper. "They named their child...they're stupid." It's that fast.

Sadly I think she's serious.

I just hope that the advice I gave her (not reprinted here) stuck. I told her to consider how other people would perceive, spell and pronounce her kid's name, and that she was better off going for something that was unusual but a real name, and if she wanted something really whacky to use it as a middle name instead. You know, common sense (that isn't necessarily common).

Yah. I had a friend in my high school days. April M. Bloom.
Tall, thin, blonde. Very friendly, hardly ever said a discouraged word, unless going on walks with me...
Odd thing though, in the social circle, neither of us carried ID cards. I didn't want to be part of what is now becoming the Real ID act, she hadn't gotten to it, didn't drive... Only, she had one.

She just wasn't going to show people that her parents had given her April May Bloom, especially as she turned out to be a late bloomer. Just, wasn't going to give mean people the shot across her bow.

Dementica and Discordia?? Maybe they should just name it Disaster and be done with it. *sigh*

You know, Discordia doesn't sound too bad when you go phonetically, but you can't really escape the (associated) meaning... much like with Candida (which is an existing name).

But then again, having been in plenty of pregnancy communities when pregnant with Dashiell, I know that there are plenty of people who really don't give much thought to the names they choose other than that they like them personally, or find the spelling really "youneek".

When I pointed out that their kid might get picked on, she said she was planning on homeschooling, as though that really made my point moot. She'll still be judged on her name at some point... if not a school playground then somewhere else.

Someone should've suggested Eris to them. That way they can still have the satisfaction of naming their daughter after the Goddess of Chaos, but though unusual the name won't get them beat up or rejected from college - it sounds simple, like Erin or Iris.

Eris is nice, and certainly not as obvious as the other odious choices she had.

That is what I worry about (the associated meaning). I don't understand naming a child a negetive word. Discordia is awesome for a character name but much too negetive IMO for a real life name.

Homeschooling I guess would help in some ways but still even with homeschooling the kid will see other kids. And you are right... how about in the office. What if the kid wants to be president?

I like that her problem with the name Satan is that it's no good for a girl. Why not Satania then??

Oh my.

ye gods :/ She sounds very young. There's plenty of lovely, gothic-sounding baby names (Emily, Lily, Cleo, Zoe) that are out there without having to resort to Dementica!

On a related note, my in-laws' neighbour named her children (not sure of spellings, but I expect they were pretty unusual as well): Chalice, Manson and Militia!

Chalice, not too bad... Manson, way worse, and Militia? Oh my.

I think parents need to consider their kids (more) when they pick names, not just their own selfish desire for a name. Sure, I may like a name, but I don't have to live with it, which the kid will have to do.

I always liked "Lucifer" more than "Satan." :p

I have a good friend with an older sister named "Trinity."

As my friend put it, "She was doomed from the start. How do you grow up to be anything but crazy when your name is Trinity?"

Last I heard, she was living in NY with her husband, her husband's girlfriend, her daughters Summer and Autumn, and preparing for the Apocalypse. I only wish I was joking.
From: [identity profile] tanthe.livejournal.com
Someone very inactive on my FL has a daughter named Trinity. A post-Matrix release baby, which I'm guessing is where most of the current wave of Trinitys are from.

The Apocalypse being kid #3 or the actual 4 Horseman Apocalypse?

Oh, and on an unrelated note, maybe it's me, but whenever I hear of a polygamous marriage/relationship set up it's always the husband coming out of it with 2 women, never 2 guys... :P
From: [identity profile] ladyattercop.livejournal.com
The 4 horsemen kind of Apocalypse.

Apparently girlfriend is being "trained" to take over as wife and mother once Trinity is killed in the inevitable Second Coming.

I'll give you a moment to absorb that.

Again, from my friend (whose name is Coralann--she was the lucky one in her family), "This is why I have cats. I'm not passing on these genes!"

Also on the unrelated side tangent, if I were the polygamist type, I would TOTALLY have a boyfriend or two on the side just to screw with the odds. :p
From: [identity profile] tanthe.livejournal.com
Considering men go to war more than women, who's being trained to take over once the husband in that little menage-a-trois croaks?

:P

I like how they assume the wife will die... not the gf or anyone else.
From: [identity profile] leonatos.livejournal.com
No prizes for guessing why.

Well, it could be worse. What If the poriginal parents that you described in the post actually called Secretia? Although the dumb ones wouldn't catch on
